How to Make Wood Cutting Boards?
Making a wood cutting board will be very easy if you have all the necessary items. It serves perfect for DIY purposes and lets you make your own design. For making a wood cutting board, you need hardwood, mineral oil, wood glue, brush, and sandpaper. You will also be requiring other tools as a miter saw, table saw, round over bit, sander, planer, clamps, and router. Here are the steps to make wood cutting boards.
Preparing the Wood
We can start the process by preparing the wood. Select a hardwood of appropriate size having a thickness of about 1 inch. If it is not in a perfect size, you can cut it to give it a perfect appearance. Once you are done with it, you will have to lay out the cut pieces and make sure that the wood pieces are of the same length. Now you can set the table saw and rip the board down to the size. Make sure that you do it carefully so that there will be no warping.
With the help of a table saw, you will have to cut the scraps down. Now you need to make another rough layout and see if the design is coming out. Follow it by smoothing the gluing surfaces so that they can hold each other perfectly. You need to run the wood through the planer to have perfect smoothness.
The Gluing Process
We now begin with the next step which is the gluing task. With gluing, you will be able to hold things together. Take clamps and leave the board carefully. Now take the glue and spread it evenly. You can flip the board one by one and make them stand up against each other. Alternately you can even use a glue brush. You will have to keep the boards flat and even. If there is any excess glue, you can wipe it off.
Getting the Final Shape
We now move in getting the cutting board’s final shape. Begin by removing the cutting board from the clamps. Make sure that it is firmly attached and you have let it stay overnight. You can now place the board on the planar. To give a clean look, you can trim the ends. Some people also use a round over to give it an attractive and unique look.
The Sanding Part
Sending is one part that helps to offer a smooth wood cutting board. With the help of a sanding paper of 100-grit, you can raise the grain. You can walk through sanding paper of 220-grit. To remove excess dust, you can wipe it off with a damp cloth. See if it has a smooth feel when you touch it.
The Final Stage
In the last stage, you will have to take mineral oil or beeswax and give it a fine coating. In doing so, you will be able to have a perfect finished wood cutting board. Mineral oil coating also helps to offer good water protection. Once done, you need to let it dry. Your wood cutting board is now ready to use.
