How to Properly Build a Concrete Swimming Pool Step by Step
Concrete swimming pools last for years before needing repairs or basic repairs. This is why these pools are a favorite among many. If you want a high-quality pool, then look no further than concrete. Typically, builders use gunite or shotcrete with mixtures of sand and concrete, which they then spray on metal frames. If you are interested in knowing how to build a concrete pool, we’ve highlighted a step-by-step process down below.
Here’s How to Build a Concrete Swimming Pool
Choose a space on your property where you want to build your pool
The space should be free of obstacles; it should also not be below a slope to prevent debris from blowing into your pool. Your pool should also be in direct sunlight for added warmth.
Measure the space you’ve chosen and sketch a basic design of what you want
Determine what extra features you want, like a diving board, waterfall, Jacuzzi, etc.
Source for reputable contractors and ask them for advice
A professional contractor will look at your design and show you how you can improve on it. Next, you’ll want to get a building permit, or your contractor can acquire one on your behalf. You may also need to look for subcontractors specialized in wiring and plumbing.
Once you get your building permit, you can begin excavating the area where you’ll install the pool. Mark the measured spots using chalk and begin digging. Dig out all the soil in the general shape of your pool. Use a backhoe from a subcontractor to get all the dirt out. You also want to use measuring sticks or tape to keep track of the pool’s depth. You can sell or dispose of the removed soil.
Use a steel rake to level the bottom of the pool
Continue shaping the pool to the exact shape you want it to be. You can keep track of the pool’s depth using sticks and attaching strings to them.
Frame the pool with plywood boards and steel rebar
How your contractor lays the plywood and rebar will help prevent concrete from leaking and spilling over. The contractor will always make sure to place the rebar net before adding concrete.
Install plumbing lines
For this, you will need to refer to the pool’s plan to determine where the plumbing lines are. The wiring subcontractor will wire the pool’s electrical and filtration system. The electrician will link the pool’s system to your home, and they will also install lighting components if necessary.
Pour concrete into the bottom of the pit and spray the walls
Smoothen the concrete out, then cover the concrete with a plastic sheet for a minimum of 5 days. If you don’t have a plastic sheet, ensure you spray the concrete with water 4 times a day.
Install tiles in the pool basin using mortar
Next, install coping, marble, stone, or concrete around the pool. Lastly, fill the pool with water by using garden hoses hooked to a water outlet. You now have a complete pool.
