How to Make Roman Shades With Rings?
There are various ways you can make Roman shades. In this article, we are focusing on making Roman shades with rings. What you will be requiring is fabric, brass or plastic rings, thread, wooden dowels, wood trim, blind cord, eye screws, rope cleat, and velcro. Keep in mind that you will have to get the best quality fabric. A medium-weight cotton fabric can be a perfect choice, and you must never opt for thin fabrics. Here is the list of the steps of making ROmand shades with rings.
Measurement
The measurement is the prime step that you will have to go through before making roman shades with rings. Here you have got the option to make outside or inside mount shades. Outside mount blinds are wider and cover the window frame. When it comes to inside mount blinds, it provides a clean look from the inside.
With an outside mount, you don’t have to worry about reducing the window size. It also allows the light to enter the room and you can easily fix it on the wall. Now let’s come to the measurement part. You will have to leave more fabric on the top and a little at the bottom to give it a fold. Once you are done with dimensions, you can now proceed to the second stage.
The Sewing Part
People can have better convenience when they use a DIY roman shade hardware kit. It includes all necessary items that enable you to make roman shades with rings at home. You will have to lay the fabric on the floor and allow an inseam of 1.5-inch. Following this, you can cut the fabric panels and make the shade. Always give a double-fold hem at the edges. Now take the fabric edge and make the first fold which is 2 centimeters. You can use a ruler and make sure there will be maximum accuracy. To keep the fold intact, you can iron it again.
Fold the edge so that the row edge becomes invisible. You can double fold it and flatten it with an iron. Do it accordingly on all four sides. Follow this by pinning the double folds. Take a sewing machine and use matching thread to make straight stitches on the folds. You can then take a velcro and sew it on the top edge. Always begin from the soft side so that there will be no breakage.
Calculating the Distance
Now it is time to calculate the distance between each ring. First, you need to make the mark so that you can place the rings. A gap of around 8 inches will make sure there will be a perfect appearance. However, this will also depend upon the type of shade. Let us assume that the blind height is 2 inches, then you will have to divide it by 8. This will let you know how many rings you require. Accordingly, you can adjust the distance and place the rings after calculation. You can make the marks by starting from the lower edge. Always keep in mind that the first mark is 4 inches. This will be followed by the distance calculated.
Some More Sewing and Attaching Dowel
Again you will have to sew on each mark. Make sure that the rings have to be of the same height on both sides. You can align with the edge so that the stitches become invisible. Try to stitch on the thick layer that will hold the rings securely. In the next step, you will have to sew a dowel that helps to slide. With it, there will be a perfect lifting blind as dowel adds some weight. It also helps to prevent the shade from pulling.
You can cut the fabric in a rectangle. The height is according to the size of the dowel. Follow this by folding the small edges and pin and sew them. Give a simple fold in order to prevent complications. You can now fold the rectangular strip and pin it on the back. Ensure that you slide the dowel between the two lower rings. Again sew the fold on the blind so that you can create a tubular shape. Next, you will have to cut the dowel at the same length.
Attaching the Rope
Attach the rope on the lower ring with a knot and then pass the ring. Do it on the opposite side. You need to place velcro on each top. Follow this by pulling the rope slightly and confirm if the bottom remains unfolded. We are now on the finishing part. If there is any extra length, then you can cut it off. The final step will be to attach the rope. You will have to fix a rope wrap on the sides of the window.
A relaxed look will make sure there will be a clean appearance. To have a fancy look, you can even add beads. You can add dots of glue to make the knots strong. However, do keep in mind that you don’t add too much that will create a messy look. Give it a sample appearance and then try to customize it.
Setting Up and Installation
You will have to hang with shade on the wall. For this, you need to screw a wooden frame. The blind height determines the placement of the trim. Once you are done, you can glue velcro. This also gives you the advantage of removing it for washing purposes. However, a strong velcro can hold the blind strongly. By using eye screws, you can pass the rope that helps to lift the blind.
Finally, keep in mind that the shade will need two hooks. Select the first hang and then pass the rope through the rings. Alternately you can lay down the fabric and keep the wrong side up. Following this, you can let the rope pass through the rings. This will allow you to hang it on the wall conveniently. That is how you can finish making roman shades with rings and install it successfully.
