How to Quilt with a Sewing Machine for Beginners?
Wondering how to quilt with a sewing machine? For those who do not know, a regular sewing machine will let you use it for quilting. If you are a beginner, this guide will let you know how to quilt with a sewing machine. Here are all the steps you need to keep in mind to quilt successfully.
Getting a Spacious Table
You will need a large table surface to start the quilt. Make sure that you clean the table first. Make sure that the table is spacious that accommodates the quilting material. If the quilts get down, there will be bad stitches. In some cases, you can join two tables to make one large surface. You will also have to keep space for making the design.
Making Small Units
If you take large units, then it will be frustrating. Start by taking small units and prevent any kind of workload. The small quilting must not exceed 50 inches. You must sew the borders appropriately and you must piece the fabrics quickly. To make sure there will be perfect holding, you can use binder clips.
Selecting the Backing Paper and Choosing the Block Size
You must always select the backing paper wisely. A dark paper can reflect fewer mistakes. It can lead to clumsy stitching as you will not be able to detect fall-out threads or over-stitch. When it comes to choosing the block size, you can go for a square or a diagonal block. For beginners, it is advised to select a simple block. Never try to make a dramatic shape, as it can bring you a headache.
Preparing the Quilt Sandwich
Make a grid line on cardboard and keep the backing side down. You can iron it to make it flat. With the help of a basting spray, cover it all over the backing piece. Take the fabric and lay it flat. You need to make three sections and keep them flat. If it is a poly fabric, do not iron it. Keep in mind that you will have to be accurate in the measurements. For this, you can always make markings.
Starting the Sew
The next step will be to start the sewing. You can begin by sewing the edges. Similarly, you can prepare the second backing and follow it with the rest of the blocks. It is always advisable that you start with a small project first. For a large project, you can divide it into four large squares. Before you begin the sew, you need to leave a seam of ¼.
Block Binding
Once you are done preparing the blocks, you will now have to bind them together. Make sure that you have cut down the extra fabric. There are two types of binding. An unfolded binding for the back must be of 1-inch. the folded binding must be of 1.5-inch. Try to iron it to give a flat appearance. If anything goes wrong, then use extra fabric. Begin by placing the strand of 1-inch and cover it. Follow it by placing the folded bind on the right side. Now you need to align the sections. Do it one after another.
