If you are the kind of person who loves spending time in the water on your inflatable boat, it goes without saying that at some point, the colors will fade. This will make it look older and used than it actually is. Is your inflatable boat looking like it could do with an appearance upgrade? If you are at this point and are wondering whether it is possible to paint your inflatable boat, the answer is yes, you can.

Reasons to Repaint Your Boat

Believe it or not, revamping an old boat is not always why people want to repaint an inflatable boat. One reason is that you could have bought a new boat, but don’t really like the color. It is possible that at the time of purchase, the color you really wanted was unavailable. So, after purchase, you can simply paint the boat to the color of your choice.

Another reason is that you may want to use the boat as an emergency boat, and you need to paint it in easily visible colors.

Tips on Painting an Inflatable Boat

Inflatable boats are made from different kinds of material, including PVC, Hypalon, vinyl, or rubber. Other boats even have an extra layer of nylon. Before you begin painting your boat, you need to ensure that you have the right kind of paint for that boat/material. Most paints will work well with Hypalon and PVC boats. However, suppose your boat has nylon or vinyl. In that case, you may want to look into getting special paint suitable for those materials.

You can paint your boat using the following steps:

  1. Choose a bright sunny day to paint your boat. If you do not have enough space outside and need to do it inside, make sure the space is big and airy enough. You could do so in a garage and ensure all the doors and windows are open.
  2. If you are painting your boat in multiple colors, cover the areas you do not want to paint with tape or plastic.
  3. You can apply most boat paints using a spray gun or a paintbrush. If you are using the former, you want to ensure you’re wearing the right protective gear, such as goggles and gloves.
  4. Paint the boat by following the directions given by the manufacturer. Some paints may take a longer time to dry than others. Still, some paints may also require multiple coats to achieve the color you want.
  5. Let the paint dry by following the manufacturer’s instructions.

You can follow the same steps mentioned above when applying antifouling paint to the bottom of your inflatable boat. However, you should note that it is preferable to apply bottom paints with a brush instead of a spray gun.

When you have the right tools, correct paint for your boat, and enough time, painting your inflatable boat is a relatively simple process. By following the manufacturer’s instructions and the tips outlined above, you can enjoy having a new-looking boat by simply changing the paint color.
