Can You Paint over Rust with Engine Enamels
A rust surface is not suitable for painting. It can lead to a rough finish, and there could be peeling and grain raising. To prevent this, you need to prepare the surface nicely and paint over the rust. Keep in mind that you can paint over rust after you have neutralized the rust. For this, you will have to follow the necessary instructions and paint with engine enamels to get the job done perfectly.
You can remove rust in many ways. Sandpaper, chemical rust remover, and brush are some of the products. Always make the surface smooth so that the engine enamel can stick to it. In some cases, there can be peeling paint that you need to get rid of. However, never sand old paint that includes lead.
The Cleaning Part
A clean surface makes sure there will be perfect paint adhesion. You must always get rid of dirt, oil, grease, and moisture. By using soap and water, you can clean the sanded part thoroughly. If it has oil and grease, then use a degreaser. Never use solvents as it can make the old paint soft. If you use solvents, there will be a wrinkled finish on the new paint.
If the surface has excessive rust, then you will have to use corrosion protection. It not only improves adhesion but helps to hide the rust. Try to apply it multiple times so that there will be a smooth surface.
Once you are done with the cleaning task, you need to let it dry. If it has extensive rust, then you can always opt for priming. With priming, you can have a paintable surface. However, do keep in mind that you will have to leave the primer applied for a day. It must dry completely else it will affect the consistency of the engine enamel paint. Priming also helps the engine enamel paint to dry quickie.
However, a high-quality engine enamel paint will eliminate the need for priming. It has a powerful formulation that helps to prevent rust. However, the main purpose of priming is to have a smooth surface. It prevents the likelihood of color change. Just apply a thin coat of primer and let it dry.
Applying the Paint
There are many ways of applying paint. For better convenience, spray paint will be the best option. Always apply the paint when the surface is completely clean and dry. Read the instructions carefully and then proceed. If you want to apply with a brush, then you need to apply thin coats. This helps to prevent drips and runs. Once you are done with the first coat, let it dry completely.
The Final Step
Check if the paint is completely dry and it has provided the right color. If it does not provide a smooth surface, then you can reapply the engine enamel again. You can apply it multiple times until you achieve the desired color and surface. Do keep in mind that you need to apply it only when it is dry.
