cold brew coffee

If you are a coffee lover and you can see the summer approaching, you should ready to move on from hot brew coffee to cold brew coffee. Cold coffee is quite popular among coffee lovers. It is clear from its huge demand in coffee selling outlets like Starbucks. You can make cold coffee as good as hot coffee at home with a French press besides from a drip coffee maker.

When it is hot outside, you have to ensure your inside stays cool. Therefore, you cannot afford to drink a cup of hot coffee no matter how much you love to start your day with it. This is because your inside will heat up, and you will start to perspire profusely. If you are looking to make the best cold brew coffee, you should have a French press.

What You Need

  • A French Press
  • Quality Coffee Beans
  • A Burr Grinder
  • Room Temperature Drinking Water
  • A Fine Filter
  • A Container

Tips

  • The quality of the coffee depends on the quality of coffee beans as well as the water you are using.
  • You should use coarsely ground coffee. If it is too ground, the taste will be bitter.
  • To dilute a strong cold coffee, you can add ice, water, and even milk.

Preparation

french press

Step 1 – Grind The Coffee Beans

It is very important to use an accurate amount of coffee beans to get the taste perfect. If you want a strong coffee, you should take coffee beans to water in 1:5 ratio. Otherwise, the ratio of 1:4 is perfect. You can also use a weighing scale in your kitchen to get the measurement correct.

Here, we are taking 1/3 cup of coffee beans. Use the burr grinder to grind the coffee beans. But make sure the beans are coarsely-ground. Do not grind them too fine. Once done, pour the coarsely ground coffee into the French press.

Step 2 – Pour The Water

Take one and half cups of water. Make sure the water is at room temperature. Here we are taking coffee beans to water ratio of nearly 1:5. Pour the water slowly into the French press, preferably in a circular motion. Use the back of a spoon to submerge any ground coffee floating atop the water.

Step 3 – Time To Wait

You have to wait for 12 hours or more for brewing. The brewing process should be at room temperature. Plan your waiting time accordingly so that you can get instant coffee when you need it.

The more time you give, the better it is, and you should not rush the waiting period. This will release the flavor and oil stored in ground coffee. Moreover, make sure that the French press’s plunger is in the up position.

Step 4 – Press The Plunger

After the waiting period is over, you should push the plunger down. This is done to separate the actual cold coffee from the grounds and sediments.

Step 5 – Filter It Out

Even though the metal screen of the French press filter out the coffee, it is not very efficient. Therefore, take a container and pour the coffee from the French press through a fine filter.

Step – Serve Cold Coffee

Take a cup and pour the coffee from the container. You can add an ice cube into it. Don’t worry, the taste of the coffee will not change much as it is concentrated. You can also add milk and cream as per your preference. Stir well and let the ice cube melt before enjoying your cold brew coffee.

Wrap-Up

Making a cup of cold brew coffee is not that difficult when you have a French press. Except for the waiting period, you can enjoy as good a cold coffee as you get in coffee joints in the streets. You can store iced cold brew coffee in the refrigerator for one week, and hence, there will be no dearth of cold coffee when you need them.
