With a pool, you can enjoy fun dips to cool down on a hot day. Pool days are fun for kids, friends, and family alike. If you own a pool heater, then you can extend the fun to cooler months too.

Keeping a pool clean is one of the biggest challenges you can have. There is so much gunk from dirt, algae, oils, hair, and more that easily piles up in your pool, posing a health risk. Of the culprits mentioned, algae are a big one that pool owners struggle to get rid of.

The easiest way to get rid of pool algae is by using a pool vacuum. However, a vacuum is expensive, and not everyone can afford to have one. If you have a pool and need ideas on how to get rid of algae, the article will discuss what algae are, the different types of algae, and tips on how to get rid of them.

What is Algae?

Simply put, algae are plant organisms that grow in your pool and can cause issues like clogging in your pool’s piping system. Algae also tend to flourish in a dirty pool filled with debris. Interestingly, there are always algae in your pool; you just don’t notice it because it is in a controlled amount. However, with the right conditions, algae will grow, become noticeable, and cause many issues. Factors such as low chlorine levels, poor circulation, infrequent cleaning, and high pH levels all contribute to algae growth.

There are different types of algae, including green, yellow, black, and pink algae. Of the different types, green algae are the most common, with pink being the rarest.

Steps to Cleaning Algae in Your Pool

You can easily clean algae from your pool without using a vacuum in the following ways;

Use algaecides

Pool Algaecide

Algaecides are chemical compounds that are specifically geared towards killing off algae. There are algaecides specific to the different types of algae, so you may need to determine what kind of algae you have in your pool. If you’re sure of the type of algae, make sure to purchase versatile algaecide that takes care of all the types of algae.

After you’ve purchased the algaecide, switch on your pool pump and let the water circulate. You will need to use about 16 ounces of algaecide for every 10,000 gallons of water. This is just a rough estimate, and you may need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Let the filter run for at least 12 hours, and you’ll soon be algae-free.

Use pool shock products

This is the least expensive way to get rid of algae from your pool. Shocking helps increase chlorine levels in your pool which helps kill off algae. While shocking, use gloves and goggles and use a product like calcium hypochlorite. Apply the compound to the affected pool areas. Wait for at least 6 hours and ensure you keep your filter open. Do this process at night at wake up to an algae-free pool.

Using the processes mentioned above, you can quickly get rid of algae cost-effectively without using a vacuum!
